Event Details

The leading developer of the Regency and early Victorian era was Thomas Cubitt. In 1820 he began work on the Duke of Grosvenor's estate, incorporating the marshy waste of Belgravia, using spoil from the excavation of St Katharine's Dock to raise the land. Grand houses were built and garden squares designed and planted. Some of London’s wealthiest residents moved in making Robert Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, the wealthiest of them all. These squares in Belgravia remain some of the most desirable addresses in Westminster and have been lived in by dukes, prime ministers, ambassadors, actors, poets and authors. Find out about the history of the gardens and some of the famous and infamous residents who once lived in and around them.
